Abstract/Summary

A.C Allen and Partners applied to Daventry District Council for outline planning permission for residential development on 0.54ha of pasture land adjacent to Spring Croft, Church Street, Sibbertoft, Northamptonshire (NGR: SP 680825). The application site lies within the eastern part of the village and contains substantial, albeit ill-defined, earthworks which presumably denote medieval or post-medieval settlement or related activities (fig 1). The site also lies within an area of the Naseby battlefield and may reveal evidence of that conflict, possibly linked to the presence of the Royalist baggage train to the west of Sibbertoft. The Historic Environment Team of Northamptonshire County Council advised that an archaeological evaluation should be undertaken prior to the determination of any application for this development. Initially this took the form of a desk top survey, a metal detecting survey, earthwork survey and a geophysical survey, the results of which were to inform the strategy for trial trenching.
