Abstract/Summary
An evaluation was undertaken on land off Wharf Road, Higham Ferrers, Northamptonshire. The evaluation identified a part of a group of Iron Age pits, a large linear Roman boundary ditch and other smaller Roman ditches, and a Saxon ditch. Other features included three boundary ditches, a series of pitched limestone drains and a quarry, all of post-medieval date. An undated isolated pit and two ditches were also recorded. The features were generally located in the area to the north-west corner of the site, with little or no archaeological activity from the trenches south and east. Pottery was recovered form most of the features, with middle to late Iron-Age pottery form the pit goup, and a quantity of Roman and early-middle Saxon sherds retrieved from the upper fill of the large Roman boundary ditch. A Roman copper alloy ligula was recovered from the primary fill of the same ditch. Three flints were also retrieved as residual artefacts.
