Abstract/Summary
A desk-based assessment, geo-technical test pitting and a watching brief were carried out on a site on the corner of St Andrews Street and Regent Street. Historic maps showed that the current street frontage of St Andrews Street has changed little since 1610, and that the site remained undeveloped until 1746. The construction of two irregular blocks of buildings fronting onto St Andrews Street subsequent to this date were part of the extensive urbanisation of this part of the town at this point. However the fieldwork elements indicate that the site is extensively truncated by former cellars, tanks and previous foundations. Any medieval remains are likely to survive as small islands or beneath a great depth of post-medieval and modern overburden.
