Abstract/Summary

In October and November 2003 an archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken of land at Wakerley, Northamptonshire, in advance of proposals for development of the area for mineral extraction. The assessment revealed that the proposal site is of archaeological and historical significance. A number of archaeological sites of the prehistoric, Roman and Saxon periods have been identified within and adjacent to the proposal site. An airfield, known as Spanhoe Airfield, was constructed in the north part of the site in 1943. The extent and condition of the airfield remains is not known but the site is considered to offer high archaeological potential.
