Abstract/Summary

An archaeological desk based assessment and buildings recording was carried out on the Baptist Chapel and Manse, Watling Street, Towcester. The Chapel of 1887 comprised the first use of the plot mapped in any detail although there is evidence that a house formerly stood on the street frontage. Second-phase schoolrooms to the rear may have once been divided along gender lines. The adjacent Manse, now 40 Watling street, may have been built in the mid 19th century as a single storey building but had been raised to form two storeys, possibly when it assumed its function of Manse, later in the century. It retains ample structural evidence of its former size and form within the frontage portion of the property.
