Abstract/Summary

Three sections of timber previously removed from this house were supplied by Northamptonshire Heritage (Northamptonshire County Council) for dendrochronological analysis. Two of the timbers were from the blades of a smoke-blackened A-frame removed from the roof, the third was a floor beam thought to be original to the insertion of the present floor. The tree-ring patterns from the two A-frame blades matched each other and were combined into a single sequence which dated AD1305-1383. Making allowances for the missing sapwood, the most likely range for the felling of these timbers is AD1390-1419. The single sequence from the floor beam retained its complete sapwood and was found to have come from a tree felled in the late spring/early summer AD 1735.
