Abstract/Summary
In July 2005 ASC Ltd carried out a watching brief during the excavation of geotechnical trial pits at The Former Tannery, Wellington Road, Raunds, Northamptonshire. The work was required under a planning condition due to the proposed residential redevelopment of the site. The watching brief focussed on the excavation of 20 trial pits. The pits revealed extensive hydrocarbon contamination and deep made ground. A fuel tank and cast iron pipe possibly relating to the former gasworks or tannery were noted. With these exceptions no artefactual or structural archaeological evidence relating to the gasworks or any earlier activity was observed.
