Abstract/Summary
A watching brief was carried out by Northamptonshire Archaeology during the excavation of soil test pit close to Woolmonger Street. Natural ironstone lay at a depth of 1.7m below present ground level and was sealed by a thick homogeneous layer of grey-brown clayey loam, with recent building remains above this. No other archaeological deposits or finds were present. This suggests that this part of the Woolmonger Street frontage had not been occupied by buildings in the medieval and perhaps the immediate post-medieval periods, and that from the 18th century onward buildings had been founded in the upper part of this soil horizon.
