Abstract/Summary

Building recording, analysis and a desk-based assessment have indicated that the Old Rectory, Barnwell was probably purpose-built in the very early nineteenth century, perhaps around 1810. It comprises a number of simple phases but all were probably completed in quick succession, the house reaching its current size by 1822. It is split into distinct areas, comprising private, devotional, reception and service areas. Other alterations continued throughout the nineteenth and much of the twentieth centuries to suit individual Rectors. Map evidence assessment suggests that an earlier rectory building may lie to the north or east of the current building while human remains in previous archaeological fieldwork indicate that widespread graves lie under the lawns between the rectory and the church tower.
