Abstract/Summary
Northamptonshire Archaeology conducted a watching brief throughout works to refurbish the house, outbuildings and grounds at Preston Capes Manor, Preston Capes, Northamptonshire. This followed on from geophysical survey and trial trench excavation in 2004. The work was conducted on behalf of Roger Coy Partnership for Mr G Stanton the owner in fulfilment of a Planning Condition from Daventry District Council and in connection with a Scheduled Monument Consent issued by the Dept of Culture, Media and Sport. The work exposed and recorded a variety of structural features of probable medieval date and others of post-medieval origin, apparently connected with earlier manor layouts and the pre-existing motte and bailey castle. These may include part of the bailey's palisade and ditch and the foundations of a 13th-century manorial chapel with distinctive segmental apse.
