Abstract/Summary
During November 2009 Phoenix Consulting carried out an archaeological trrench evaluation across the site of a proposed residential development to the south of harrington Road, Rothwell. Prior to the trenching exercise, a geophysical survey had been carried out which identified a number of dispersed anomalies across the site, some of which may have been of archaeological origin. 10 trial trenches were therefore excavated across the site, designed to investigate the various geophysical anomalies as well as test 'blank' areas to act as a control. The trial trenching found no strong evidence of archaeological activity. The only features identified were a former field boundary ditch and three burnt out tree stumps. No dateable artefacts were recovered from any of the excavated features. The majority of geophysical anomalies were shown to represent variations in the natural geology.
