Abstract/Summary

An archaeological trial trench evaluation was undertaken as part of a pre-planning application for residential development. Archaeological features and deposits dating to the medieval, post medieval and modern periods were revealed, which included pits, ditches, a stone surface, and recent animal burials. Parts of a metalled surface or surfaces were found in trench 4 which may have been a yard or trackway across the site. The evaluation has indicated that the remains at the site are of local significance, likely relating to the 18th-19th century utilisation of the Warmington landscape, and that further remains relating to farm yard surfaces and possible structural remains may exist beyond the area evaluated. A single pit containing medieval pottery was also present and may indicate limited medieval occupation of the site. A small assemblage of artefacts including pottery, tile, iron nails, clay tobacco pipe and animal bone ws collected. The recent animal burials were left in situ. The potential impact of the proposed development is likely to be high because archaeological features were found at a depth of c.0.4m below existing ground surface which is less than the depth of standard foundation and service trenches. However, the archaeological potential of the site is considered to be low due to the low density of features and finds encountered.
