Abstract/Summary

Appendix 1 – District Map The district map shows the villages in the District covered by separate ‘Village and Town Design Guidance’ leaflets. These are the villages which have been classified in the Local Plan under policies H3, H4, H5 and H6. Each ‘Village Design Guide’ describes the general characteristics of the village and gives specific advice on the design and external materials for new development. The leaflet includes a village map marking listed buildings and other significant buildings in the village which play an important part in the built fabric of the settlement. It also indicates important trees, hedgerows, open spaces and walls and highlights important views both outward and inward. Public footpaths, bridleways and Conservation Area boundaries are also shown on the map where applicable. It is most important that developers and designers consider the appropriate Village Design Guidance notes in conjunction with these General Guidance Notes when formulating their proposals. Appendix 4 – Assessment Criteria for Inclusion of Village Map Features Significant Buildings: Not necessarily pre 20th Century. Contribute to sense of enclosure. Frame important views. Create attractive groupings. Reinforce Village edge. Have some architectural merit (e.g. good example of its period). Create focal point in village ‘scape’. Important Walls: Contribute to sense of enclosure. Provide good visual links between buildings. Of considerable age and character to the street or village spaces. Listed walls. N.B. Please note these buildings and walls were identified in 1996 and are not routinely updated. As part of the current programme of Conservation Areas Appraisals officers are re-checking these buildings and walls.
