Abstract/Summary

Northamptonshire Archaeology conducted an archaeological desk-based assessment of land east and west of Ashton Road, Roade, Northamptonshire. There are a few recorded prehistoric or Roman sites and finds in the vicinity and the plot of land lies just beyond the medieval core of the village. Map evidence suggests that the site lay within Roade’s open field system, until Inclosure in the early 19th century. The main part of the site was partly quarried in the late 19th century and two limekilns were present. The Simplex Polish factory was opened in around 1910 on a site to the north, becoming Pianoforte Supplies Ltd in the 1920s. The company expanded into the current site through the 20th century, until factory buildings and car parking covered much of it. Only the south-western part remains undeveloped.
