Abstract/Summary

The building is a brick built, slate roofed outbuilding known to have been used to stable horses between 1985 and 2009, and currently used for storage. The earliest map found showing Rushton Grange with outbuilding is 1886 where, unlike the adjacent buildings this outbuilding appears not to have had a roof. By 1900 it has a roof. An earlier map dated 1837 shows a 'barn and rickyard' in the approximate location. This would indicate a building was erected on the site between 1837 and 1886 and roofed between 1886 and 1900. The adjacent barn has a date plaque 1849 and the family known to have farmed the area first appear in Rushton in the 1851 census, although further research would be required to confirm that they were actually living in the house now known as Rushton Grange.
