Abstract/Summary

In June 2012 an archaeological building survey of Hillstone Cottage, Brook Street, Hargrave (NGR: TL 03341 71142), was carried out prior to proposed internal alterations and extensions. The survey revealed the property to be a modest tenant farmer's house which was probably constructed for one John Loakes in 1771. The house comprised a 2 storey, with attic, three unit plan with a possibly contemporary service outshut attached to the rear. Although much altered internally a number of probable original features remained including two substantial open fireplaces surmounted by plain timber beams and roughly chamfered ceiling spine beams in the main body of the house. Several largely in situ plank and batten doors, with some contemporary fittings and frames were also noted. Later features of interest included a 4 panelled late 19th century door and contemporary frame and a similarly dated decorative Coalbrookdale Company cast iron hob gate incorporating a view of the Iron Bridge.
