SNN109219 - Archaeological Geophysical Survey of the Proposed 'Towcester Vale' Development Area, Towcester, Northamptonshire March-April 2012

Northamptonshire Archaeology was commissioned by CgMs Consulting to conduct a magnetic gradiometer survey of the proposed ‘Towcester Vale’ development area. The survey covered approximately 180ha to the south of Towcester, extending from the A43 in the west to the A5 in the east. Many remains of Iron Age or Romano-British date were detected, including a large and multi-phased settlement, a second, smaller settlement with an associated field system, several isolated ditched enclosures and various smaller features and linear ditches. The survey also detected features relating to the shrunken village of Wood Burcote, and extensive tracts of former medieval ridge and furrow field cultivation.
