Abstract/Summary
A programme of archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken on land adjacent to 13 Bridge Street, King’s Cliffe, Northamptonshire. The investigations monitored three trenches prior to residential development of the site. The site lies close to the core of the medieval (AD 1066-1540) village, best represented by the 12th century and later church of All Saints. South of the church is the site of a royal medieval hunting lodge. Romano-British (AD 43-410) remains have also been found to the south of the church. The investigations revealed a sequence of natural deposits overlain by a former topsoil, a subsoil and an area of made ground. A dumped deposit of mortar was also revealed but remains undated due to a lack of artefactual material. Finds retrieved during the investigation include a single sherd of medieval pottery along with later post-medieval pottery and glass.
