Abstract/Summary

A geophysical (magnetometer) survey covering approximately 8.5 hectares was carried out on the north-western edge of Irchester to inform the determination of an outline planning application for residential and associated development. No anomalies corresponding to linear and curvilinear cropmarks identified within the development area in the Archaeological Assessment and Northamptonshire County Council SMR have been identified. The survey has identified extensive anomalies indicative of former quarrying activity of unknown period/s. Evidence of medieval or post-medieval ridge and furrow ploughing is also noted. A single anomaly of unknown, and therefore potentially archaeological, origin has been identified. However, on the basis of the geophysical survey the archaeological potential of the site is considered to be low.
