Abstract/Summary
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in November 2012 as a pre-determination requirement on a proposed planning application for residential development on land northwest of Well lane, Barnwell, in order that the potential impact of the development on such remains may be assessed by the Planning Authority and, if necessary, an appropriate mitigtion strategy put in place. The archaeological evaluation at Well Lane revealed limited evidence for archaeological activity in the form of a single probable quarry pit of medieval date along with several possible medieval plough furrows, reflecting the site's proximity to medieval manorial and castle sites and village core. An archaeological watching brief was subsequently undertaken intermittently during March and May 2013 in order to monitor the groundworks and to record any archaeological deposits that would be affected by these works. Monitoring revealed a small number of truncated, fragmentary linear features of medieval date.
