Abstract/Summary

This report relates to a programme of building recording required by condition of Listed Building Consent by Daventry District Council for remodelling and renovating the existing outbuildings to provide parking and storage. This Level 2 recording includes a written and photographic record of the character, age, layout, structure and fabric of the buildings, including and remaining fixtures and fittings. The report discusses the development and use of the buildings. Measured plans and elevation drawings of the buildings in their pre-conservation state were produced by Waterland Associates of Oundle, Northamptonshire, and formed part of the original submission for Listed Building Consent. It is intended primarily that the barn and loose boxes be restored to their original condition, although three alterations are proposed. The proposal involves the removal of the stable doors in order to create a carport, with the intermediate brickwork being knocked out so as to create a single larger opening through which a vehicle can be driven. The barn will be adapted for use as a store for garden equipment, and for this a new opening shall be created at the rear. It is proposed that this will be at a point where the brickwork is badly damaged so as to minimise the impact upon the structure. It is also proposed that corrugated iron sheets on the barn roof - which are in fact the original covering - shall be replaced with natural Welsh slate. The objective of this report therefore is to provide a thorough and comprehensive record of the barn and loose boxes in their pre-conservation state before the proposed work begins. Every aspect of both buildings has been carefully photographed to ensure that the record will be complete.
