Abstract/Summary

Archaeological monitoring was undertaken on the site of a building extension at the Wheatsheaf Public House, Crick. The planned extension will incorporate the western part of the pub car park. The monitoring visits possessed the ability to identify evidence of medieval settlement remains which could be compromised by the development. An archaeological evaluation trench excavated earlier in 2015 revealed a row of cottages which lined Church Street in the 19th and 20th centuries as well as later medieval cut features. The monitoring identified the partial continuation of one of these features with an additional north-easterly oriented feature which was previously unidentified. Early modern features were also revealed. These include a brick yard surface and a wall. A drain or inspection pit which may have connected to a brick-lined culvert which was observed in the evaluation but not observed during the monitoring.
