Please read our guidance about the use of Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
Trial trench excavation undertaken in 2015 identified extensive evidence of a row of cottages demolished in the 20th century which had destroyed most earlier features. However, late medieval features, comprising a ditch and a pit, were identified in the north-eastern end of the trench. A continuation of the ditch was identified in subsequently monitoring of the foundations and an earlier ditch was also identified.

Full Description
{1} A single L-shaped trial trench was excavated in advance of a proposed extension to the Wheatsheaf Public House. Building work associated with a row of cottages on Church Street had truncated much of the archaeology, especially an area of cellaring. The buildings were demolished in the mid-20th century and demolition material had been used to elevate the ground surface. Two medieval features, a ditch and a pit, were identified at the north-eastern end of the trench. The ditch was aligned south-east to north-west and contained pottery dating to the 15th/16th centuries. A pit revealed by the excavation of the ditch contained Shelly Coarseware dating between 1100-1440 and a sherd of late Chilvers Coton Ware.
{2} Monitoring of the foundations identified a continuation of the medieval ditch to the south. It truncated an earlier ditch.
