Abstract/Summary

An archaeological desk-based assessment has been produced by University of Leicester Archaeological Services (ULAS) for land adjacent to The Yews, 24 High Street, Gretton, Northamptonshire (NGR: SP 90003 94412). The HER for Northamptonshire has indicated that there are a number of sites in the vicinity of the assessment area, ranging in date from the prehistoric to the post-medieval periods. The proposed development area is located within the core of the medieval village of Gretton, immediately to the south of the site of the medieval manor house. There is therefore potential for the below-ground presence of medieval archaeological deposits within the development area. The site does not appear to have been previously developed: the extent to which levelling may have previously been undertaken for use as a tennis court was not clear during the site visit. The state of preservation of any surviving archaeological deposits present therefore is unknown. The visual impact of the proposed development upon the nearby listed buildings will be minimised by the existing vegetative screening that surrounds the redundant garden.
