SNN110275 - An historic building analytical survey (Level 3) of Pearce's Leather Works, Wellingborough Road, Northampton, Northamptonshire, 2011

As part of the major redevelopment of the former Pearce’s Leather Works, Northampton it is proposed to demolish part of the existing factory buildings and a number of outbuildings which are located around the main complex. Lagan Homes intend to construct 126 dwellings within the footprint of the demolished factory and convert the remaining office building for office usage. An interim report was issued in November 2010 (ULAS report number 2010-216) which covered an Historic Building Analytical Survey (English Heritage (2006) Level 3) of the outbuildings located to the east of the complex. This report combines the results from the interim report and presents the final results for a Level 3 survey of all buildings affected by the development. The work was undertaken by the University of Leicester Archaeological Services (ULAS) between the 17th of November and the 9th of December 2010. The main Grade II listed factory, offices and Power House were designed by Wilfrid Lawson Carter and were constructed in 1937-1939 in the International Modern style. The cellulose store, to the south east, is of the same overall scheme of design as the factory and was likely to have been constructed very soon afterwards. The remaining outbuildings post-date the main complex and represent a progressive increase in buildings from the 1950s up to the 1990s. The combined offices and factory retain many of their original fittings and have undergone little significant alteration during their working life.
