Abstract/Summary

In October 2013, historic building recording was undertaken of Chapel Cottage, 1 Moulton Lane, Boughton, prior to residential conversion. This former Methodist chapel was constructed in 1804, the first in the Northampton area. It was constructed in a simple vernacular style, using local stone, with a thatched roof. However, it did have some pretensions in its size and the inclusion of a gallery. The building was re-roofed and renovated in 1851, when the roof was probably slated, and was again restored in 1868. Throughout the second half of the 19th century its congregation increased and declined repeatedly. The building was again renovated and re-roofed - possibly with the present machine-made tiles - Since then it has been used as a garage and store. The survey revealed that little structure evidence remains of the original chapel building other than the four walls. Internally, although some features typical of chapels are present, these are all modern pastiche, post-dating the building's use as a chapel.
