Abstract/Summary
A geophysical survey by magnetometry was undertaken by Allen Archaeology Limited on land off High Street in Flore, Northamptonshire to support a planning application for a residential development. Although a previous desk-based assessment of the site showed that it lies within a landscape containing prehistoric and Roman activity, the survey has not revealed any evidence suggesting these remains extend into the site. Ridge and furrow earthworks were noted on the surface of the field, and these are clearly shown in the survey as linear positive and negative anomalies covering the majority of the site. Several other positive linear anomalies may be of archaeological interest, although it is not clear from the survey data. The magnetometer survey has identified a number of modern services and drains crossing the site. Scattered randomly throughout the site are a number of strong and weak dipolar responses. The characterisitic dipole response of pairs of positive and negative spikes suggests near-surface ferrous metal or other highly fired material.
