Abstract/Summary
MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology) was commissioned by CgMs Consulting, on behalf of their client David Wilson Homes, to carry out an archaeological excavation on land at Overstone Leys, Northampton, Northamptonshire, prior to the proposed development of the site. A total of 0.35ha was machine stripped under archaeological direction. The archaeological remains included a possible Iron Age enclosure, dated by a single sherd of pottery, with a number of placed deposits of cattle skulls. Anglo-Saxon features comprised the truncated remains of two ‘sunken-featured buildings’ (SFB). One or both of these may have gone out of use by the second half of the 5th century AD. The articulated remains of an adult male individual were found in the base of one of the buildings. Other notable finds included two decorated antler spindle whorls and other worked bone tools found within one of the SFBs. There was also a single undated pit.
