Abstract/Summary

In July 2015, a programme of archaeological observation, investigation, recording, analysis and publication was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology at 19–21 St Edmund’s Road, Northampton. The fieldwork comprised the stripping and archaeological investigation of two proposed new build footprints. A photographic record of the exterior of the standing warehouse building at 19–21 St Edmund’s Road was also compiled. Archaeological interest in the site is derived from its location just beyond Northampton’s medieval town wall and East Gate, in the medieval extramural suburb of St Edmund’s End. Brick walls encountered in the stripped areas relate to buildings shown on late 19th to early 20th century mapping of the site. These buildings were demolished in the latter decades of the 20th century. The archaeological works did not identify any evidence of past activity predating the modern period. Deep deposits of modern made ground were recorded directly overlying the partial remains of the 19th-century buildings and the natural substrate, indicating that the site has been heavily truncated in the modern period.
