Abstract/Summary

This report presents the results of archaeological monitoring and recording undertaken on land at 153 Glapthorn Road, Oundle, Northamptonshire. The project was commissioned by Francis Jackson Homes Limited to fulfil a condition attached to planning permission granted by East Northamptonshire Council for the construction of six new dwellings. The site lies on the northern outskirts of Oundle, outside the historic core of the settlement. Iron Age settlement, a possible Anglo-Saxon cemetery and medieval quarrying had all been recorded in the general area. The groundworks associated with the construction of the dwellings were subject to archaeological monitoring. No traces were identified of any archaeological remains comparable to those recorded elsewhere in the general area. A simple sequence of subsoil and topsoil was recorded overlying natural clays, in addition to rubble associated with the recent demolition of standing buildings on the site. No artefacts were retrieved during the investigations.
