Abstract/Summary
In August 2017 historic building recording was undertaken of St Giles Clinic, 67 St Giles Street, Northampton, prior to demolition and redevelopment of the site. The clinic, a single-storey, flat-roofed brick building constructed in a restrained Art Deco style, was constructed in 1936 as a purpose-built health clinic on the north side of St Giles Street, on a site which had largely been undeveloped since the mid-18th century. Following the establishment of the NHS the clinic continued to operate until it closed in 2014, having served as an ‘Infant Welfare Centre’ (c.1962) and more recently as a Health Centre, offering dental and medical services and a family planning clinic. Apart from the fabric of the building itself, little remains of any period detailing apart from a glazed transom in the entrance foyer, the tall north-facing windows in the central waiting area, the parquet floors and the two glazed hatches, now disused, on the south side of the waiting area.
