Abstract/Summary

Between May and July 2016 KDK Archaeology Ltd undertook a programme of Observation and Recording of Church of St Mary and All Saints, Main Street, Fotheringhay, Northamptonshire. This project was undertaken to supervise the installation of services in and around the church in preparation for new facilities within the building. Substantial masonry remains were revealed to the south of the church, which has provided evidence for the location of the southern porch that had been demolished during the Dissolution of the Monasteries between 1536 and 1541. Other structural elements that were exposed included the present church foundations and a patterned stone pathway in front of the northern porch entrance. A total of 22 articulated and partially articulated inhumations were discovered, located on all but the eastern side of the church. Most are believed to be medieval or early post medieval in date. However, at least two individuals had been truncated by the foundations of the church and the masonry remains believed to be the southern porch, indicating that the churchyard in Fotheringhay was in use before the construction of the nave c.1434.
