Abstract/Summary

A building survey was carried out in 2016 at 2-4 Arthur Street, Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, NN8 4JU for JSW Consultants. This factory was built between 1896 and 1899 for Mr William Hawkins, a boot and shoe manufacturer, and shows two later phases of extension and modification between 1916 and 1924 and in the 1920's or 1930's. All the modifications and extensions appear to have been directly related to the expansion of the local and regional boot and shoe industry. Final minor modifications appear to have taken place during the 1960's when it was used as a tyre depot and motor garage. Many of the buildings original architectural features are still apparent, some easily viewed and some masked by modern timber stud walls and cladding
