Abstract/Summary

An archaeological investigation was carried out by Souterrain during the excavation of foundation trenches for two new dwellings on land at 24 Saffron Road, Higham Ferrers, Northamptonshire. The work took place over five days, between the 2nd and the 12th of October 2017. The development site, of about 400 sq. m, occupies a former medieval burgage plot within the historic centre of Higham Ferrers. The site is known to have been occupied by industrial or commercial buildings from at least the late 19th century until the early 21st century. On account of its proximity to historic medieval landmarks, such as Chichele College and the site of Higham Castle, the development area was considered to have potential for the survival of buried remains, pertaining particularly to the medieval periods. The earliest feature observed was a fragment of limestone rubble wall foundation on the southern boundary of the site, which had been cut through by a small pit dated to the late 17th or 18th century. The foundation possibly represented a dividing wall between burgage plots. Elsewhere, there were no deposits earlier than fairly extensive layer of rubble and soil of broadly post-medieval date. A possible stone quarry was revealed on the south side of the site which had been back-filled in the 19th century. The areas of ground excavation were surveyed to Ordnance Datum and photographed, and representative measured drawings were made of the stratigraphic sequence.
