Abstract/Summary
A trial trench evaluation in 2015 revealed a large deposit of hon cores in the southern part of the site. Subsequent observation during the cutting of the foundations recorded the general stratigraphy and further horn cores and animal bones were recovered. It is suggested that the remains are from a tanner/tawyer. The closest contemporary tannery was at 8 Watling Street, a short distance to the south-east of the plot. The plot was situated between two streams, which frequently flooded, making it less desirable land. The ground had been levelled up using discarded waste material in the 18th-19th centuries.
