Abstract/Summary
The HE Level 2 Survey has succeeded in its aim of providing a written, drawn and photographic record of the building prior to refurbishment. The building pre-dates 1885 and its exact original function is unknown. Based on the design of the building it is considered likely that it originally functioned as a small workshop with the former window openings on the northeast elevation providing natural light for industrial activities. The building has been altered over its history and by at least the late 1920’s to 30’s operated as a confectionary by William Bitchenor and later his son David. The building previously contained two heating coppers, a rolling slab and a wrapping machine although no evidence of this plant now survives. The sweets were produced for local consumption and were sold at markets in Wellingborough and Northampton. In more recent times the building operated as a brush factory and at the time of the survey was used for general storage.
