Abstract/Summary

Allen Archaeology Limited were commissioned by David Wilson Homes South Midlands to undertake a geophysical survey using magnetometry on land off Whites lane, Harlestone, Northamptonshire, prior to submission of planning consent for a residential development. The site lies in an area of some archaeological interest, with possible later prehistoric or Roman cropmarks in the vicinity of the site, and a number of worked flints have been recovered nearby. Running across the northern part of the site are a number of intermittent positive linear anomalies. They are likely to represent ditches and former plough marks, possibly medieval ridge and furrow cultivation or more recent agricultural activity. There was extensive magnetic noise recorded across the site, possibly as a result of modern detritus in the ploughsoil, or possibly as a result of the underlying limestone geology. This response may have masked some more subtle archaeological features, but there was nothing visible in the survey data that could confidently be identified as being of archaeological interest.
