SNN111472 - Rugby Road, Kilsby, Northamptonshire: Archaeological Topographic Survey and Evaluation Trenching Report

Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by CgMs Consulting Ltd. to carry out a programme of topographic survey and evaluation trenching in advance of a proposed housing development, NGR 456109 271486. The work followed on from previous desk-based assessment (CgMs 2014) and geophysical survey (Stratascan 2014). The topographic survey recorded surviving ridge and furrow of probable medieval/ Post-medieval date, across the northern and southern sections of the site. The evaluation comprised the excavation of eleven trenches, two of which were targeting geophysical anomolies. The only identified archaeological features in eleven excavated trenches were an undated ditch and gully in Trench 7; the latter most likely a land drain. The ditch most likely relates to a modern 20th century boundary which was then filled in with the construction of modern housing along Rugby Road. Land drains were also present in Trenches 1, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9 and 11. A tree throw was present in Trench 3. The anomalies targeted by Trenches 7 and 11 were not observed and were thought more likely to relate to paths across the fields. No artefacts were recovered during the investigation. The project archive resulting from the survey and evaluation will be prepared in line with guidelines for the depoisition of archives in Northamptonshire and will likely be deposited in due course with the Northamptonshire Archaeological Resource Centre.
