Abstract/Summary

CFA Archaeology Ltd carried out an archaeological watching brief on a construction site 300m north‐west of the historic town centre of Northampton on the west side of Little Cross Street bordered by Lower Bath Street to the north and Fitzroy Place to the south. Overall the plot measures 1840 square meters. The development comprised of demolition of a block of two storey flats and construction of new buildings. The development was centred on OS grid ref. SP 74958 60673 and was essentially flat at 69m aOD with the former patios terraced into the hillside to the west and the level of Little Cross Street 2m above this. The archaeological monitoring focused on works which had potential of disturbing natural geology - especially digging the foundations and a soakaway ditch. The remains of 19th century buildings overlying large feature probably the moat of the medieval barbican were found within the latter.
