Abstract/Summary
In September 2014 AS carried out historic building recording at The Chapel, Stoke Doyle Road, Oundle, Northamptonshire. The programme of works was carried out in order to fulfil a condition of planning consent imposed for the residential conversion of the former chapel. Documentary research and detailed technical analysis reveals a former combined nonconformist and Anglican mortuary chapel set in a planned cemetery. Designed by the architect Edward Browning, it was constructed in Gothic Revival style and opened in 1859. Externally, the building typifies the prevailing design for cemetery chapels of the mid-19th century and follows closely many of the elements outlined in J.C. Loudon's guidelines for the architecture of cemeteries. Externally well-preserved, the interior of the chapel has seen some degradation of features though a number of original finishes survive, either in good condition or in outline. Features include the original red and black geometric floor tiles throughout, the roof form, a number of original doors, while specific elements include an altar rail and the original bell.
