Abstract/Summary

During June 2015, KDK undertook a strip, map and sample excavation at The Cottage, Church Lane, Slapton, Northants, in advance of the construction of a 2-storey extension on the footprint of an earlier single-storey extension to the rear of the building. The site is located within the core of a shrunken medieval village, and the surrounding fields contain the remains of house platforms or closes, and it was thought that there was the potential for surviving medieval settlement remains in the area of proposed development. It was found that the previous extension had involved ground reduction across the site to a depth of c.1.3m below ground level. Any archaeological remains located within this area would have been removed during this earlier ground reduction, and consequently no archaeological finds or features now survive within the proposed development area.
