Abstract/Summary
Between September 2019 and September 2010, a watching brief was maintained during groundworks for footings for a pair of cottages and a detached house on land adjacent to the former ‘Sun, Moon & Stars’ public house in the High Street, Blisworth, a Grade II listed building dating from the late 18th century. This followed a previous stage of work in 2019, comprising preparation of a historic building record of the listed building, before its refurbishment and conversion to apartments. The cottages were located to the immediate south of the former public house, on the site of a large single-storey outbuilding, latterly used as the pub kitchen, which had been demolished by a runaway lorry in 1988. The detached house, ‘Mill House’, was located at the south end of the site, overlooking the Grand Union Canal, on land that had been a paddock in the 19th century, and more recently part of the pub car park and garden. Apart from a 19th-century brick-lined well located to the rear of the cottages (and shown on early OS mapping), the watching brief did not reveal any buried heritage assets.
