Abstract/Summary

MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology) was commissioned to undertake earth resistance and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys on a part of the site of the former Northampton Castle. The survey area, a narrow strip of open ground on the eastern side of St Andrew’s Road, provided a transect across the inner bailey, north gate and barbican of the castle. The resistance survey did not provide any archaeologically useful information, but the GPR survey identified a number of wall foundations. Whilst many of these are likely to relate to medieval structures (including elements of the north gate) it is possible that some relate to more recent buildings.
