Abstract/Summary

Two areas covering the garage area of plot 1 and the footprint of plots 2 and 3 of the proposed development were soil stripped focussing on features identified during the evaluation in trenches 1 and 2. In addition to the features located in trench 1, a further two areas of archaeological activity were identified in area 1. These consisted of a post hole and an area of intercutting quarry pits. A furrow first uncovered in trench 1 was also revealed to actually comprise a series of intercutting quarry pits, one of which contained a single iron nail. Area 2 encompassed the northern extent of evaluation trench 2 however, the only feature present in both was a ceramic drain. A further three areas of archaeological interest were identified in area 2, consisting of two areas of deep quarry pitting, and a stone capped drain. A number of finds were recovered from the backfill of the stone lined drain cut including a range of post-medieval and modern pottery sherds. It is possible that this drain is associated with a series of cottages present west of the site that were demolished between 1958 and 1977 (according to historic mapping).
