Abstract/Summary

In April/May 2021, KDK Archaeology Ltd carried out Historic Building Recording of Upper Farmyard, Thenford, Northamptonshire, in order to fulfil Condition 6 of planning permission/Listed Building Consent for the conversion of the buildings on the site. Upper Farm, previously known as Home Farm, appears to date from the late 17th century, although the earliest building on the site, a stone-built range containing two barns, is probably late 18th / early 19th century. The other buildings within the development site have their origins in the late 19th century, with the exception of the north range, which was built in the latter half of the 20th century re-using the building materials from the 19th century structure that it replaced. Many of the buildings were originally open fronted and designed to accommodate livestock, although 20th century alterations included blocking some of the earlier openings and providing the courtyard with a roof. Despite the considerable changes over time, earlier stone walling has been retained not only as field boundaries, but also in the building to the south of the main courtyard, which was extensively rebuilt in the later 20th century within the walls of a 19th century yard and its associated building.
