Abstract/Summary

This collection comprises GIS data and images taken during work at 2 Polwell Lane, Barton Seagrave, Northamptonshire during July 2019. A Programme of Archaeological Observation, Investigation, Recording, Analysis and Publication was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology during groundworks for the development of a two-story dwelling with associated landscaping and a new property boundary. Principle interest in the site derives from evidence of Iron Age and Roman activity to the north, east and south; an early medieval cemetery to the south; and, immediately adjacent to the site, the southern limits of a Scheduled Monument comprising the earthwork remains of Barton Seagrave moats, fishponds and shrunken medieval village. A single ditch aligned broadly east/ west, was recorded across the centre of the site. A small assemblage of early Roman period pottery was recovered from the ditch, which may represent a boundary ditch associated with the Roman settlement excavated c.70m to the south of the site. No features or deposits that may be associated with the Scheduled Monument were identified during the course of the fieldwork.
