SNN113133 - Images and GIS Data from Archaeological Evaluation of EC9 Daventry South East Gateway - Phase 1 March 2021

This collection comprises images and GIS data from archaeological evaluation of land at EC9 Daventry South East Gateway, London Road, Daventry, Northamptonshire. This work was undertaken in March 2021 by Cotswold Archaeology at the request of Howkins and Harrison. A total of 33 trenches were excavated across the 12.5ha site, which is located approximately 100m to the south of the Scheduled site known as Burnt Walls. Very few features of archaeological origin were identified in the evaluation trenches. No evidence for any continuation of the Burnt Walls settlement was seen, and no diagnostic artefactual material predating the post-medieval period was recovered. Aside from furrows related to the agricultural management of the landscape in the medieval and post-medieval periods, the only other features of archaeological origin encountered during the evaluation comprised four shallow ditches investigated in trenches 10 and 12, and a possible pit in trench 24. The ditches in trenches 10 and 12 were broadly located in the position of two curving linear anomalies identified by a preceding geophysical survey, although neither anomaly corresponded exactly with the exposed ditches. Artefactual material confirmed a post-medieval date for all four ditches. The single, small pit investigated in trench 24 did not produce any dating evidence, although the charcoal-rich fill, which also contained fragments of fired clay is suggestive of a dump of waste from some form of hearth or high temperature feature.
