Abstract/Summary

An archaeological trial trench evaluation was undertaken of land at Castilian Chambers, 2 Castilian Street, located at its junction with Derngate, Northampton, Northamptonshire. This was in advance of proposed residential development of the site. The site lies in an archaeologically sensitive area within a medieval tenement group, close to discoveries of Saxon to post-medieval remains. The trenching evaluation revealed a medieval rubbish pit, evidence for probable post-medieval quarrying and a 19th century garden soil. No structural evidence of the medieval tenements was revealed although finds included medieval pottery. Post-medieval pottery, CBM (ceramic building material), clay pipe and animal bone were also retrieved.
