Abstract/Summary
In March 2018 and February 2019 MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology) Northampton carried out an archaeological trial trench and test pit evaluation on land between roundabouts at Overstone Road and Spinney Hill, as part of the A43 Moulton bypass, Northamptonshire. The evaluation revealed evidence of a curvilinear Iron Age enclosure ditch, a large subrectangular Roman enclosure and an early–middle Saxon sunken featured building (SFB) or “Grubenhaus”. Additionally a possible post-medieval well and five adjacent stone-lined drains were found. Two undated palaeochannels were revealed on the south side of the site following the valley, which may represent sections of the same feature. A single undated ditch was also recorded. The only artefact of interest was a pinbeater used in the manufacture of textiles, found in the fill of the Saxon SFB. Twenty test pits were also excavated in and around the woodland located along the eastern side of the A43, north of Spinney Hill roundabout. No archaeological remains were found at this location.
