Abstract/Summary

The site of the former Bronnley Soapworks lies on the eastern side and at the southern end of the town market place of Brackley, Northamptonshire. Previous documentary research has indicated that the tenements fronting onto the market at this location include a property held in the 14th century by Alice Ie Wollemongre, with a house named "Le Blakehalle". In the 15th century this house, or a later building on the same site, is recorded as a hospice. Archaeological trial excavation of a small overgrown garden, immediately to the west of the former soapworks has confirmed the presence of buried deposits of post-medieval and medieval date, comprising the truncated remains of a later medieval building and associated floor levels deeply buried some 900mm (av. 116.17m above Ordnance Datum) below the modern ground level.
